You are at the front of the geography class, and the wall map is up. Open this country spinner wheel. Tap Spin once. The country that stops is the one students find on that map.

Spin one country, then point to it

This country spinner wheel does the task you name first. Find the country on the map, or say one fact in the target language. One spin does that one task. It does not pick a student, a capital, or a blank map to click. More class wheels are on the classroom spin wheel.

If that country is already found, remove the slice, then spin. Do not leave it on the wheel and spin for a different country.

Each spin uses crypto.getRandomValues in the browser. With equal weights, every country name still on the list has the same chance.

Find that country on the map

The wheel starts with the full list of country names. Spin once, and students find that country on the map. Delete names this unit does not need before the first spin, such as every country outside one continent. A capital, a US state, or a compass point does not belong.

How to run the spin

  1. Agree the task. Before the first spin, say which task is live: find it on the map, or one fact in the target language. One spin does that one task. Do not switch tasks after the country lands.

  2. Keep country names only. This list is country names. Call it a country wheel if you want. Same list. Take off a capital, a US state, and a compass point. If this unit is one continent, delete the other names before the first spin. If you need to pick which student points, use the classroom name randomizer. This wheel still lands the country.

  3. Tap Spin once. The country name that stops is the country for the task you agreed.

  4. Remove a country already found, then spin. If Kenya is already found, delete Kenya, then spin. Do not leave it on the wheel and spin until a different country lands.

  5. Replace the set when the unit changes. Delete the countries you are done with and keep the next set. Do not stack the new names on top of the old list.

When this wheel helps

Map find

Agree find it on the map before Spin. Brazil is the country for that task. That spin is not also a language fact.

One language fact

Agree one language fact before Spin. Japan is the country for that one fact. That spin is not also a map round.

Next continent

Agree that this round uses one continent. Delete every country outside it before Spin. Do not add those names back on top of the shorter list.

Tips

  • Start from the full country list. Delete names this unit does not need before the first spin.

  • Agree the task before anyone taps Spin: find it on the map, or one language fact. One spin, one task.

  • If that country is already found, remove the slice, then spin. Do not spin until a different country shows up.

  • Turn on full screen so the class can see the country name.
